Songpath Remixed

Ryan Ingebritsen with special guests Chris Chelgren, Kent Henriksen, and John Schjolberg

Last summer, Minnesota native composer and sound artist Ryan Ingebritsen tried something a bit out of the ordinary for his usual musical activities. Having spent the last 10 years composing and performing electro-acoustic music in Chicago for ensembles such as International Contemporary Ensemble, We Can and We Must, and 12 Dimension-Plane of Sound and Vision Orchestra, he was awarded a McKnight Foundation Visiting Composer residency to create and perform what he call Songpaths in the Minnesota State Parks. Songpath is a compositionally guided listening tour in which Ingebritsen spent weeks hiking in various parks looking for spaces that had certain unique sonic properties that seemed to create a pleasing musical arc as one hiked through them. He then selected two trails, The Quarry Loop Trail at Banning State Park, and the Trout Run Creek trail at Whitewater State Park, and explored these trails in depth gaining an intuitive understanding of each. The result- over two weekends at each park in late summer, Ingebritsen led groups of hikers or “audiences” along the Songpath, using a mix of meditation and listening exercises as well as a little help from musicians placed in the parks, to make the listeners acutely aware of their sonic surroundings. The Songpath in the Minnesota State Parks was the first attempt at this for Ingebritsen and during his explorations he captured a good deal of sonic and visual material in addition to performing the hikes themselves.
Come Join Ingebritsen and fellow collaborators in a re-exploration of some of this material in Songpath Remixed, an improvisation based on a video score created from some of the video material he collected during his solo hikes. The musicians will take their cues from the video itself while simultaneously being manipulated in real time by Ingebritsen using various analog and digital processes creating an ambient sound score as fluid and simultaneously intricate as the video footage it is based on.
