This film series takes place at the Bryant Lake Bowl on the first Wednesday of the month. Each screening will begin with a brief (10 minute) introduction of the movie by the writer who will discuss how it has informed or inspired their writing practice. After the movie, the writer and a specialist (someone engaged with the film's themes or subject matter - a dancer/ scientist/ lawyer/ painter/ film scholar/ activist etc.) will have a conversation about the film, writing, art making and the ways in which different practices inform one another. The audience is invited to participate in the conversation through questions and comments. There will be food and drinks and smart artists saying smart things! November’s film is The Great Beauty, introduced by the novelist Patrick Nathan in conversation with Roy Guzmán.
Patrick Nathan's first novel, Some Hell, was published by Graywolf Press in February. From 2011 to 2013, he was the founding editor of Mill City Bibliophile, a literary review based in Minneapolis.
