Empty Nest
What happens when the kids grow up, the mirror feels a little less friendly, and your spouse is still your scene partner? You write a show about it.
Married performers Laura Zabel and Levi Weinhagen bring a new show about identity, marriage, aging, and transition — with plenty of laughs.
Through a mix of sharp stories, absurd sketches, and knowing winks at the audience, Empty Nest dives into life’s big transitions and finds the humor in the awkward, poignant, and downright ridiculous moments along the way.
“This show is about what it means to grow older together — and to figure out who we are in a new phase of life,” says Zabel. “It’s either make this show or clean out our garage,” adds Weinhagen.
Whether you’re happily coupled, flying solo, or just curious about how two funny people can stay married and still make art together, Empty Nest offers a night of stories, sketches and bits of life in transition.
Laura and Levi met performing at the Brave New Workshop and have performed for more than two decades in theater, comedy, and storytelling — and at home, they’ve been improvising marriage and parenting for over 24 years.
Tickets are $15. Doors open at 6pm. Online ticket sales end at 5pm.

Karyn Wilson
Guest Director: Eric Heiberg
Produced by JimJam Media (Sarah Arnold-Simondet and Philip Simondet)
Since 2013, The Local Music Scene has showcased the talents of over a hundred local musicians. Philip Simondet created The Local Music Scene over a decade ago. At the time he was hosting the music open mic at The Chatterbox Pub and came up with the idea as a way to get more people to hear the songs. "People would play these incredible songs they wrote, and it was mostly the same regulars that would ever hear it. I started The Local Music Scene so more people would hear my favorites," said Simondet. Collaborating with other artists is a common theme in everything JimJam Media produces. In addition to The Local Music Scene, the duo is also responsible for THE PAiNTERS (which features local painters, The Residency at BLB (which features 2 local improv groups weekly), and Holidating (an improvised musical). They also perform as SAPS, "the most interactive improv duo in the world."
For this run, we've handed control over to guest director, Eric Heiberg. Heiberg is a longtime fan and frequent LMS improviser. He had a vision for how to fine-tune the format of the show (which, in improviser jargon, is a Harold/Armando with songs instead of games/stories). He's handpicked a cast of incredible improvisers. His rehearsal process involves drilling skills and the introduction of a BRAND NEW ELEMENT to the show! We can't wait for you to see what he's come up with.
Tickets are $10 in Advance / $15 at the Door. Doors open at 6pm. Online ticket sales end at 5pm.

The Residency at BLB feat. BLACKOUT and Too Bad We Don't Vibe
Watch and discuss the best improv in the Twin Cities!
Every Friday at 9:30 pm, The Residency at BLB features 2 improv groups who present their own solutions to the question, "how do you create 25 minutes of theater - without a script!"
BLACKOUT (Karyn Wilson, Jada Pulley, Duck Washington, Alexis Camille, AlysshaRose Jordan-Bird, Lukas Ramsey, Khary Jackson, Destiny Davison, Dorian Beal, Aron Woldeslassie), the first all-Black improv group based in Minneapolis, does a combination of long form and short form, with their signature format being the swag hat. They ask the audience for a topic and discuss on stage before doing scenes inspired by the conversation.
Too Bad We Don't Vibe (Holly Brooks and Marika Sullivan) is a long form duo with a montage that includes lots of meta-scene work, asides, and maybe some fun floaty stuff in-between.
Tickets are $10 in Advance / $15 at the Door. Doors open at 9pm. Online ticket sales end at 7:30pm.

The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society Podcast LIVE
A live podcast recording from the “talented and hilarious” (TC Stages) Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society. Join society members Eric Webster, Tim Uren, Joshua English Scrimshaw, and Shanan Custer for a live recording of the 400th episode of their five-star iTunes podcast The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society. This month’s lineup features a re-examination of the very first radio drama ever discussed on the podcast, “The House in Cypress Canyon” from Suspense; a no-holds-barred debate on the production’s merits; and a freewheeling Q&A with your hosts as they reflect on nine years, more than one hundred live performances, and 400 episodes of The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society!
PREVIOUS PRAISE FOR THE MYSTERIOUS OLD RADIO LISTENING SOCIETY:
“Shanan Custer, Joshua English Scrimshaw, Tim Uren, and Eric Webster have this down cold — not just the technical aspect, but the tone… Chilling as it might be to experience these tales (complete with old-school ads) alone in the dark, it’s much more fun to experience them with a crowd.” -City Pages
“An artisanal, old-school way of making entertainment... The fun is in watching these fine actors work almost exclusively with their voices … and to see them create a sepia-toned world with handmade sound effects.” - Pioneer Press
“This show is an entertaining and creepy homage to an era gone by, that of the radio drama. The creators of this show have a podcast of the same name… and their love for and knowledge of the genre is evident… There's a reason these radio horror shows were so popular, and happily they continue to exist in some form today thanks to Ghoulish Delights.” -Cherry and Spoon
ABOUT THE MORLS:
The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society performed their first staged old-time radio recreation in 2016 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis. Since then, they have appeared at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Daleko Arts in New Prague, and the Wabasha Street Caves in Saint Paul. Their recreations were also featured monthly from 2017 to 2019 at the James J. Hill Center and from 2020 to 2022 at Park Square Theater in Saint Paul. Currently, the MORLS can be seen regularly at Crooners Supper Club and the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater.
ABOUT THE PODCAST:
The Society’s live performances are inspired by the podcast of the same name. The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society Podcast revisits the great crime, horror and suspense shows from the golden age of radio, including tales from Suspense, Lights Out, Quiet Please, The Shadow, and more. Each episode features a classic, or maybe-not-so classic story, from the mysterious old-time radio vault, complete with historical notes and trivia. At the end of each podcast, your hosts, Tim, Joshua and Eric discuss the merits of the story and decide whether or not it stands the test of time.

Created by Josh Carson (A Very Die Hard Christmas), Neal Skoy (Ringling Brothers, Big Apple Circus), and Joshua English Scrimshaw (Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society), it blends pop-culture savvy, bona fide clowning chops, and a love of classic comedy into one outrageous caper ripped from the forgotten headlines. Part screwball farce, part heist, and part love letter to laughter itself.
Featuring: Neal Skoy, Josh Carson, Thalia Bea Kostman, Rob Ward, Cate Jackson, Kaitlen Osburn and introducing Joshua English Scrimshaw as the corpse of Charlie Chaplin.
Tickets are $20. Doors open at 6pm. Online ticket sales end at 5pm.

Eric Ziegenhagen and 10 Items or Fewer (Trio)
Eric Ziegenhagen returns to the Bryant Lake Bowl and the old country for the first time in forever, bringing evocative songs played on a four-string guitar that land somewhere familiar and dream-like at the same time. Eric's latest album 'Second Husband' was recorded pre-pandemic by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio and was released to streaming and elsewhere earlier this year.
10 Items or Fewer will start the night in their Action Squad Beta Trio formation of Mike Hallenbeck, guitarist Dan Gaarder and harmony singer Rhiannon Fiskradatz. Even stripped down, they put the Rocktober into October.

Nice Things Said:
“Moonlighting Chicago playwright Eric Ziegenhagen revelled in the small turnout, which suited the rec-room intimacy of his performance style. His self-effacing between-song banter was just as entertaining as the tunes he crooned, accompanying himself on his lap-strummed acoustic guitar…A festival highlight.” –Tim Perlich, NOW (Toronto weekly), NXNE wrap-up
“His own lyrics are imaginative, as you might expect…He sings a lot about cold and snow, as is appropriate for a Great Lakes guy, using inclement weather to launch into a sort of atmospheric poetry of extremity in which the characters dodge monsters and love each other in the same kind of dreamy haze.” – Monica Kendrick, Chicago Reader
“He plays a battered, four-string acoustic and sings spare, intimate little ditties that are low- key but just as witty as his pals.” – Tom Hallett, Pulse of the Twin Cities
10 Items or Fewer:
“On The Fossil Record, singer-songwriter Mike Hallenbeck flaunts his usual smarts, humor, and pathos.” —Keith Harris, Racket

The Local Music Scene presents: Dogpile
local music; improvised scenes
The Local Music Scene is a comedy show that uses songs performed by local musicians as inspiration for improvised scenes. Each show features a different local musical guest.
September
5th - Murder Curious
12th - Dogpile
19th - Joan of Profile
26th - Penny and the Bandits
Dogpile:
Dogpile is a mess. Folksy, country-like, and roots music adjacent - they can’t quite keep it all straight. Years of howling in basements and bars has left them reckless yet patient. They may be a bit ragged, but they will always be stumbling proud.
Improvisers:
Sarah Arnold-Simondet
Jill Bernard
Holly Brooks
Danica McDonald
Adam M. Mellerup
Linc Owens
Philip Simondet
Our full restaurant and bar service is available in the theater! Order from your seat and enjoy the show, we'll take care of the rest.

Insurgent Transmissions: Ghost Hunting
Insurgent Transmissions: A Palestine Film Series presents monthly screenings at Bryant Lake Bowl. Join us on September 3, 2025 at 7pm for a screening of GHOST HUNTING by Raed Andoni.
SEPTEMBER FILM: GHOST HUNTING by Raed Andoni (94m)
In order to confront the ghosts that haunt him, Palestinian director Raed Andoni assembles an eclectic group of ex-prisoners to recreate the Al-Moskobiya, Israel’s main interrogation centre, where he was himself jailed at age 18. Day after day, these construction workers, a blacksmith, an architect, an assistant director give shape to their memories of how they survived with grit and a sense of humor. As the walls of the cells rise, the tongues and the emotions loosen.
ABOUT INSURGENT TRANSMISSIONS Insurgent Transmissions is a film series highlighting the varied Palestinian experience. Made by contemporary Palestinian makers, the films depict the many ways that Palestinians resist occupation in their daily lives and filmmaking practices. Beginning with Annemarie Jacir’s touching family drama, Wajib, the programming will unfold as a series of transmissions: Jacir chooses the second film, and each subsequent filmmaker will select the next film in the series. The films in Insurgent Transmissions highlight the works of contemporary Palestinian filmmakers, amplifying their voices through their films and the films they see as most urgent in this moment of cultural erasure and genocide.
This monthly series is presented by Mizna monthly at Bryant Lake Bowl. Ticket fees go towards supporting the featured Palestinian filmmakers. Online tickets are $10, tickets at the door are sliding scale $5–15.
ACCESSIBILITY: To make these events accessible, masks are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Unfortunately we cannot require masks because Bryant Lake Bowl serves food and drinks inside the screening space. Films will be in Arabic with English subtitles.

David Lynch Tribute Drag and Burlesque Spectacular
"There are many stories. Some of them are sad, some funny. Some of them are stories of madness, of violence. Some are ordinary. Yet they all have about them a sense of mystery – the mystery of life."
Join Mink Hole, Klown Kar, and an unforgettable cast of drag outlaws to pay tribute to the one and only visionary director and storyteller, David Lynch for a night of gender trickery, live music, partial nudity, and more.
Bring your dollars to tip the divas, buy trinkets from local vendors, and patronize the Beautiful Bryant Lake Bowl. Dressing up is highly encouraged but not required.
