GHOST

A cabaret of true stories, semi-malevolent hauntings, and silly spectres, GHOST is Virginia Twins’ latest devised production. The show features a series of ghost stories told in a variety of ways, including live music, dance, mime, and experimental storytelling. Funny, bright, and at times nostalgic, this piece invites audiences to experience the “liminal, in-between identities” of ghosts, and to ruminate on what a ghost may be. Described as “Humorous, surprising, and moving”, audiences have felt “Mooooooooved and joyous!” watching GHOST. As the year begins and the light starts filtering in, what are the ghosts telling you?

Virginia Twins is a Twin Cities-based collaborative performance company that emphasizes play and experimentation in rehearsal and performance. We love to create performances, workshops, and evening-length immersive experiences using movement improvisation, devised theater, live storytelling, and humor to practice looking at the world in a slightly different way. The current group features Sasha Blinnikova, Artemis Brown, and Ben Capp ...and at least 7-28 ghosts.

One Up

One Up is a comedic storytelling show and "competitive conversation" between hosts Ben Katzner and Monica Coleslaw and a selection of their peers.

What's competitive conversation you're wondering? Of course you would ask that.
It's that thing where you're telling someone something and they're like, "Oh that reminds ME of that time *I*..." and they proceed to tell a story they think is better than yours but really is the reason you're not friends anymore. But when we do it, it's fun.

Guests will share their stories while Ben and Monica will try to one-up them. It's a pissing contest. A battle royale.
And the audience picks the best stories of the night, so come ready to rumble.

All for just $10, which is a low price to feel better than everyone else.

Monster Science First Thursdays - Law & Order - Criminal Creatures Unit

Reverend Matt teams up with Jeffrey Nolan (of Melancholics Anonymous, and elsewhere) to put the monsters of mythology, cinema, and especially weird UFO sightings on trial for their many crimes! Rev. Matt heads up the prosecution; Elora Riley is the judge; and Jeffrey Nolan embodies such entities as the Greek sirens, the faerie changelings, Bruce the shark from “Jaws,” the Hopkinsville Goblins, and more! Justice is served, and also comedy!

Reverend Matt – once called a combination of David Attenborough and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark in MPR – played by local comedian Matthew Kessen, is the star of “Reverend Matt’s Monster Science” (‘part science, part comedy, all monsters’), a multimedia series of deep studies of the lore of monsters, infused with comedy jokes. It has won a Golden Lanyard at the 2023 Minnesota Fringe Festival, Best Solo Show at the Tucson Fringe Festival twice, and Best of Minnesota at the 2020 MN Webfest. And it’s been called “effective, educational, funny, moving” by Cherry and Spoon, and Single White Fringe Geek said of it, “I could not stop grinning the whole time Rev. Matt was talking.”

The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society LIVE

The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society LIVE

Join society members Eric Webster, Tim Uren, Joshua English Scrimshaw, and special guest Laura Zabel for a live recording of their five-star (iTunes) podcast The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society. The line-up includes a classic episode from the 1940s radio program Suspense starring the legendary Angela Lansbury, a rollicking no-holds-barred debate on the merits of the episode, and a full-length improvised radio play, including live sound effects and music.

PREVIOUS PRAISE FOR THE MYSTERIOUS OLD RADIO LISTENING SOCIETY:

“Shanan Custer, Joshua English Scrimshaw, Tim Uren, and Eric Webster have this down cold — not just the technical aspect, but the tone… Chilling as it might be to experience these tales (complete with old-school ads) alone in the dark, it’s much more fun to experience them with a crowd.” -City Pages

“An artisanal, old-school way of making entertainment... The fun is in watching these fine actors work almost exclusively with their voices … and to see them create a sepia-toned world with handmade sound effects.” - Pioneer Press

“This show is an entertaining and creepy homage to an era gone by, that of the radio drama. The creators of this show have a podcast of the same name… and their love for and knowledge of the genre is evident… There's a reason these radio horror shows were so popular, and happily they continue to exist in some form today thanks to Ghoulish Delights.” -Cherry and Spoon

ABOUT THE MORLS:

The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society performed their first staged old-time radio recreation in 2016 at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis. Since then, they have appeared at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Daleko Arts in New Prague, and the Wabasha Street Caves in Saint Paul. Their recreations were also featured monthly from 2017 to 2019 at the James J. Hill Center and from 2020 to 2022 at Park Square Theater in Saint Paul. Currently, the MORLS can be seen regularly at Crooners Supper Club and the Bryant-Lake Bowl theater.

ABOUT THE PODCAST:

The Society’s live performances are inspired by the podcast of the same name. The Mysterious Old Radio Listening Society Podcast revisits the great crime, horror, and suspense shows from the golden age of radio, including tales from Suspense, Lights Out, Quiet Please, The Shadow, and more. Each episode features a classic, or maybe-not-so-classic story from the mysterious old-time radio vault, complete with historical notes and nerdy trivia. At the end of each podcast, your hosts, Tim, Joshua, and Eric discuss the merits of the story and decide whether or not it stands the test of time.

Reverend Matt's Monster Science: Agent Elora and the Lizard People of Coon Rapids

A four-night Monster Science theater event!

Join Agent Elora and Reverend Matt as Elora seeks to unlock the secrets of her monstrous origins, and comes up against the mysterious and terrifying Lizard People of Coon Rapids! Plus facts about Minnesota monsters, cryptozoological lizardfolk, and much more! Clayton Ryan "Wild man" Single Release Show Featuring Thomas Sticha

Clayton Ryan is set to release his concept album, "Ghost Town" Summer 2024. He is excited to release his first single off the record, "Wild Man" on April 12th, and is set to perform at Bryant Lake Bowl Theater with his good friend, Thomas Sticha to celebrate this release. Come on out for a special night of Country/Americana/Folk music with these legends-in-the-making.

Raised in Iowa and South Dakota, Clayton Ryan’s homegrown country soul music reverberates with a nostalgic sound and powerful songwriting. His songs have been featured in American Songwriter, GemsOnVHS, B-Sides & Badlands, and Americana Road Show, and appeared in TV and film. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Clayton has performed and recorded with artists like Cristina Vane, Liam St. John, Humbletown, Jalan Crossland, Drew Peterson, and Chad Elliott.

Thomas Sticha is a Country & Folk singer-songwriter from Saint Paul, Minnesota. His debut Country single, “Then It’s Gone,” released on January 19th, 2024. This good, old-fashioned country tune marks the beginning of the avalanche for Thomas’ recorded music in the years ahead. With influence from legendary songwriters like John Prine and Willie Nelson, the Midwest music blog Adventures in Americana called Thomas’ full-band set is “thoroughly charming” and “an appealing (blend of) country/folk.”

Insurgent Transmissions: Wajib by Annemarie Jacir

Insurgent Transmissions: Wajib by Annemarie Jacir

Insurgent Transmissions is a film series highlighting the varied Palestinian experience. Made by contemporary Palestinian makers, the films depict the many ways that Palestinians resist occupation in their daily lives and filmmaking practices. Beginning with Annemarie Jacir’s touching family drama, Wajib, the programming will unfold as a series of transmissions: Jacir chooses the second film, and each subsequent filmmaker will select the next film in the series. The films in Insurgent Transmissions highlight the works of contemporary Palestinian filmmakers, amplifying their voices through their films and the films they see as most urgent in this moment of cultural erasure and genocide.

This monthly series is presented by Mizna at Bryant Lake Bowl. Ticket fees go towards supporting the featured Palestinian filmmakers, on a sliding scale of $5–15. Additional opportunities to support urgent grassroots fundraisers in Gaza will be available at the screening.

APRIL SCREENING

On April 24, 2024, at 7pm, join us for a screening of Wajib by Annemarie Jacir. In addition to ticket fees going to support the featured Palestinian filmmakers, we will be raising money for Crips for Esims for Gaza, an initiative which has been raising money to keep people in Gaza connected despite a months-long internet blackout.

ABOUT THE FILM

Abu Shadi (Mohammad Bakri) is a divorced father and school teacher in his mid-60s who lives in Nazareth with his daughter. Now that she is about to be married, the aging patriarch is anticipating life on his own. In preparation for the wedding, his architect son, Shadi (Saleh Bakri), who lives in Rome, travels to Nazareth to help the family. As Shadi and his father spend a day together hand-delivering wedding invitations to each guest in keeping with local Palestinian custom, the tense details of their fragile relationship come to a head, while each faces the reality of their very different lives. Performed brilliantly by actual father and son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri, Wajib demonstrates Annemarie Jacir’s filmmaking mastery through its style and subtleties.

“Hurry Up and Wail” by Anna Ralls: During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, two impatient non-binary friends banter as they wait for a testosterone prescription at the drive-through pharmacy.

“The Weird Ellen Prom Queen Trendsetters” by Elizabeth Shannon: On the afternoon of their Senior Prom, Wendy and Francesca's trip to the hairdresser spurs a conversation about the difficulties of coming out.

“Bluetooth” by Liz Dooley: Finn gets a phone call from his ex-husband, who’s on his way to the hospital with their daughter.

“Just for Context” by Bethany Dickens Assaf: Elena is struggling to write a new play, but advice from long-dead writers, belligerent readers, and competing expectations from herself and her parents (i.e.: context) are stifling her creativity. When her best efforts fail, she is forced to confront why she became a writer in the first place.

Threshold Theater’s mission to produce fresh LGBTQ+ works means we create a place for the voices of the LGBTQ+ community to tell our stories no matter our sexuality, age, race, religion, or gender identity through developing and producing the new scripts of living LGBTQ+ playwrights. (This is Threshold Theater’s first full production since the theatrical pause due to the pandemic.)

#betchesnburlesque: A Parody Dance and A$$ Cabaret

Parody. Dance. Ass. "Renewed my faith in the power of a single banana, if only for a moment."

I’m not hot, you’re hot!!!! C’mon out, boo, we have some hawt sawce to make, and we need ur spicy @$$.

The best and the brightest burlesque and modern dancers give you their spin on the earnest tease, impossible levels of sexiness, embodied objectification, in the name of #flavor, f@kking cabaret, and emotional movement, in a night of parody and dance.

{Partial nudity, y'all!! Some acts are clothed, and some only hold back on the nips, tips, and lips.}

Bring dollar bills to throw, or if you’re lazy, come early and exchange big bills for ones. Get here early to eat and drink in the theater. And tip your G-D server!!

"I had such an amazing time at the last show. Your cabaret filled a hole that's been in my heart for years. Not only were the dances utterly entertaining and fun, that stage had a ridiculous amount of talent on it!” - Scott Pakudaitis

"I can't believe the 1992 Bratislavian team - the bronze medalists in rhythmic and acoustic gymnastics - actually took a break from the Pepsi Live Tour to strip here... It's been a dream of mine since I was a child."

"I am beginning to feel a strange kind of freedom..."

Insurgent Transmissions: Infiltrators by Khaled Jarrar

Ticket fees go towards supporting the featured Palestinian filmmakers, sliding scale of $5–15. Additional opportunities to support urgent grassroots fundraisers in Gaza will be available at the screening.

MAY SCREENING

On May 29, 2024 at 7pm, join us for a screening of Infiltrators by Khaled Jarrar. In addition to ticket fees going to support the featured Palestinian filmmakers, we will be raising money for Crips for Esims for Gaza, an initiative which has been raising money to keep people in Gaza connected despite a months-long internet blackout.

ABOUT THE FILM

The checkpoint is closed. “Detour, detour!” shouts a taxi driver, announcing the beginning of yet another uncertain search for a way around the barriers curtailing Palestinian movement in the West Bank. Infiltrators is a visceral “road movie” that chronicles the daily travails of Palestinians of all backgrounds as they seek routes through, under, around, and over a bewildering matrix of barriers.

ABOUT THE FILM

Foragers depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humor and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee, and Jerusalem, it moves between fiction, documentary, and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. The restrictions prohibit the collection of the artichoke-like Akkoub and Za’atar (thyme), and have resulted in fines and trials for hundreds caught collecting these native plants. For Palestinians, these laws constitute an ecological veil for legislation that further alienates them from their land while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific expertise and duty to protect. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol, to courtroom defenses, Foragers captures the inherited love, joy and knowledge in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law. By reframing the terms and constraints of preservation, the film raises questions around the politics of extinction, namely who determines what is made extinct and what gets to live on.

GHOST

Case 84: Adopted in the U.S.A.

My name is Edward Yoo Pokropski and I am a Korean American Adoptee. I was abandoned at a young age and the circumstances around that event have largely been a mystery. In 2015, at the age of 32, I finally went back to Seoul, Korea to try and find some answers. It's taken me 8 years to fully express how I feel about the experience. Maybe I've been afraid, or lazy, or been trying to catch up on all the shows people tell me to watch. Case 84: Adopted in the U.S.A. is a storytelling show that uses comedy to explore how the media shapes our misconceptions about adoption. Compelling visuals from pop culture and personal pictures from my trip to Korea take the audience on a journey through my childhood, all the way up to the present day.

Edward is one of the Executive Producers of Asian Comedy Fest - the longest-running all-Asian comedy fest in the country.
Edward is also an Emmy nominated Senior Writer/Producer at NBCUniversal.

Bandits on the Run & John Gallagher Jr.

Bandits on the Run & John Gallagher Jr.

Bandits on the Run is the musical trio of Adrian Enscoe, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn. Formed upon a chance encounter while busking in the subways of New York City, the Brooklyn-based outfit has gone on to receive accolades from NPR Music’s All Songs Considered, American Songwriter, NPR Weekend Edition, and the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project. 2020 found them busy writing and recording their EP “Now Is The Time” with producer Ryan Hadlock (Brandi Carlile, The Lumineers) and producing a short musical film “Band At The End Of The World” commissioned by NYC-based Prospect Theater Company. 2022 saw them composing music for the Netflix children’s animated series “Storybots” and scoring the movie "The Same Storm". They have been touring the globe with appearances at the Cambridge Folk Festival, Floydfest, Milwaukee Summerfest, Americanafest, the Folk Alliance, and the F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Their next release will be their most collaborative yet: a self-produced EP featuring various and sundry bandit friends that explores the tensions of a world that has been broken open but is putting itself back together; it is slated for release in mid-2024.

You may know John Gallagher Jr. as a screen and stage actor, having won a Tony for his performance in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening (feat. the music of Duncan Sheik), and gone on to star in the musicals American Idiot (Green Day) and Swept Away (The Avett Brothers). But when it comes to his own music, that’s a bit more personal. Gallagher writes love songs - lost or unrequited, hookups and breakups, love for a place or time. His songs take you from suburban nights in Delaware, family trips to the Jersey Shore, bars across Manhattan, and all the friends and lovers in between.

He’s set to release his third full-length album, “Goodbye or Something”, in Spring 2024 on Grand Phony.

GHOST
Feb
