An Evening with The Ashtray Hearts, Record Release Show

  • Bryant Lake Bowl 810 W Lake St Minneapolis United States (map)

The Ashtray Hearts celebrate the release of their 4th LP at the Bryant Lake Bowl on Sunday, November 5th, 2023. It has been ten years since the band released their last record, “The Strangest Light” which received 4-stars from Mojo Magazine’s Sylvie Simmons (author of the Leonard Cohen biography “I’m Your Man”). The band returns with all six original members including Brad Augustine (accordion, keys), John Jerry (drums), Ryan Scheife (bass), Aaron Schmidt (trumpet, keys, harmonies), Dan Richmond (vocals, guitar), and Steve Yernberg (guitars). The band will be playing songs from all their records including “Gold Century” – songs that feature The Ashtray Hearts’ cinematic take on Americana, folk, cosmic country, modern indie minimalism, and the songcraft of early Asylum Records releases.

The Ashtray Hearts’ new record includes twelve meditations on the past. With memory. With what we used to be. Vignettes of Midwestern life, the dust and summer heat, marriage, the heartbreak of parenthood, Americans who rarely die, friendship, love, loss, and sudden moves. “Gold Century” captures the convergence of memory and reflection embedded in middle adulthood - the beautiful and the tragic.

“Gold Century” is a quiet album. A record for late nights. Songs for the slow dance. So go on and break your heart.

The Ashtray Hearts is a six-piece band based in Minneapolis, NYC, and Salt Lake. Formed in 2000, the band toured the UK and the States, playing shows with The New Pornographers, Richard Buckner, Okkervil River, Laura Veirs, and many others. They’ve recorded live sessions for legendary BBC DJ Bob Harris (BBC Country, The Old Grey Whistle Test) and The Current, been written up in No Depression and Mojo Magazine, and had songs featured in film/TV. After taking a break from touring and recording when Dan Richmond left Minneapolis, the band has remained active writing songs and producing records. Their latest album, “Gold Century” (2023), marks a return of the band with all six original members, exploring their subtle, slow, and meditative take on Americana, folk, country, and indie minimalism – a sound the band once described as “apartment music”.
