Insurgent Transmissions: A Palestine Film Series presents monthly screenings at Bryant Lake Bowl.

Join us on November 2, 2025 at 2PM for a screening of WHEN I SAW YOU by Annamarie Jacir. This screening is presented as part of Palestine Cinema Days.

WHEN I SAW YOU (98m, Palestine, 2012)

In 1967, Arab states waged a second war against Israel with the objective of liberating Palestine. They were defeated, and the Israeli army deployed into the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians living in these territories fled the military occupation to refugee camps in neighbouring Arab countries, joining the hundreds of thousands of refugees that had settled in camps more than two decades earlier in 1948.

Free-spirited 11-year-old Tarek (Mahmoud Asfa) and his mother Ghaydaa (Ruba Blal) have temporarily settled in the Harir camp in Jordan, but in the chaos they have been separated from Tarek’s father Ghassan. Restless and uneasy, Tarek has trouble adjusting to the indignity of destitution and living on humanitarian aid. Only a few miles away from the Harir camp, in the clandestine encampments that border Israel, the atmosphere is radically different, as armed Palestinian freedom fighters are training for battle to reverse the course of historic injustice and reclaim their lands and homes. When Tarek and his mother cross paths with this group of combatants, the boy is emboldened and chooses to stay with them, forcing his mother to follow suit.

ABOUT PALESTINE CINEMA DAYS

As international news outlets, world leaders, and major social media platforms continue to censor and distort the narrative while fueling the dehumanization of Palestinians and their ongoing suffering, we are using our channels to support the forcibly canceled Palestine Cinema Days Festival. On November 2, the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, Palestine Cinema Days organizes over 500 Palestinian film screenings around the world. This global effort is a show of solidarity with Palestine, an act of amplification for censored Palestinian voices, and a contribution to shifting the distorted narrative.

ABOUT INSURGENT TRANSMISSIONS

Insurgent Transmissions is a film series highlighting the varied Palestinian experience. Made by contemporary Palestinian makers, the films depict the many ways that Palestinians resist occupation in their daily lives and filmmaking practices. Beginning with Annemarie Jacir’s touching family drama, Wajib, the programming will unfold as a series of transmissions: Jacir chooses the second film, and each subsequent filmmaker will select the next film in the series. The films in Insurgent Transmissions highlight the works of contemporary Palestinian filmmakers, amplifying their voices through their films and the films they see as most urgent in this moment of cultural erasure and genocide.

This monthly series is presented by Mizna monthly at Bryant Lake Bowl. Ticket fees go towards supporting the featured Palestinian filmmakers. Online tickets are $10, tickets at the door are sliding scale $5–15. Additional opportunities to support urgent grassroots fundraisers in Gaza will be available at the screening.

ACCESSIBILITY: To make these events accessible, masks are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Films will be in Arabic with English subtitles.
